    Third Extraordinary Session of ISESCO General Conference kicks off at King Abdullah Economic City in Area of Makkah Al- Mukarramah

    Today morning, the Third Extraordinary Session of the General Conference of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) kicked off at Bay La Sun Expo Center in King Abdullah Economic City in the Area of Makkah Al- Mukarramah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in the presence of a number of Member States’ respective ministers of  education, higher education, culture, and communication, or their representatives. The conference also saw the participation of the members of ISESCO Executive Council, several diplomatic, political and academic personalities, and representatives of a number of local and international media outlets.

    At the conference’s opening session, addressed were given by Dr Hamad bin Mohammed Al Al-Sheikh, Minister of Education of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; Dr Ali Zeidan Abu Zuhri, President of ISESCO 13th General Conference, President of the Palestinian National Commission for Education, Science and Culture; Dr Boubakar Doukouré, Chairman of ISESCO Executive Council, Advisor on Islamic Affairs to the President of Burkina Faso; and Dr Amina Al-Hajri, ISESCO Deputy Director General, on behalf of Dr Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri, ISESCO Director General.

    At the close of the opening session, tribute was paid to Dr Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri, ISESCO Director General, in recognition of his major role in promoting joint Islamic action, advancing and developing ISESCO and expanding its outreach; and in appreciation of his dedicated efforts to manage the work of ISESCO and strive to render it a major international organization that is actively present at both the Islamic and international arenas.

    The session’s agenda features the appointment of the new Director General of ISESCO; the addresses of the heads of delegations of ISESCO Member States; and the adoption of the conference’s Draft Final Report and Resolutions.

    It is worth noting that ISESCO General Conference is composed of ministers in charge of education, science, culture and communication appointed by their governments, or their representatives. The ordinary session of the General Conference convenes triennially and it may hold an extraordinary session.

    The first ordinary session of ISESCO General Conference was held in 1983 in Casablanca, while the first extraordinary session was held in Rabat, Kingdom of Morocco in October 1986, and the second in Jomtien, Thailand, in March 1990.

    ISESCO has 54 Member States as well as three Observer States, namely the Russian Federation, Kingdom of Thailand, and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
