    ICESCO and the World Islamic Call Society Review Development of Cooperation

    Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, Director-General (DG) of ICESCO, and Dr. Saleh Salim Al-Fakhri, Chairman of the Steering Committee of the World Islamic Call Society (WICS), discussed today, at ICESCO headquarters in Rabat, the means to develop cooperation between the two parties in the fields of education, culture, relief, and humanitarian action.

    During the meeting, which several ICESCO heads of sector and WICS officials attended, Dr. AlMalik reviewed the main developments and modernization within ICESCO, as well as the main axes of its vision and new strategy of action which aims to highlight the role and position of ICESCO at the global level.

    The DG explained that the Organization adopts an open-door approach to countries, organizations, international bodies, civil society institutions and donors, and the establishment of bilateral partnerships for the benefit of the Member States and Muslim societies around the world. He referred to projects that ICESCO implemented to support the efforts of its Member States to deal with the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, in partnership with donor institutions, and based on the needs and requirements of each country.

    For his part, Dr. Al-Fakhri reviewed the strategy of action of WICS and its offices established in several African countries, stressing that it provides support to schools in these countries and that over the years it has awarded scholarships for many students, many of whom have obtained masters and doctorates.

    The meeting addressed the areas proposed to develop cooperation between the two parties, including education, culture, medical caravans, and other programs. The parties affirmed their desire for constructive cooperation within the framework of a partnership agreement based on implementation programs and projects with tangible results.

    ICESCO DG Visits Several Historic Sites in Nagorno-Karabakh in Azerbaijan

    AlMalik: ICESCO will support Azerbaijan in rebuilding and restoring the affected historic sites in the Province

    The Director-General (DG) of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, and the accompanying delegation of Heads of ICESCO Sectors, visited several historic and cultural sites in the Districts of Fuzuli and Aghdam bordering the Nagorno-Karabakh Province. The visit is part of the DG’s current official visit to Azerbaijan.

    Several Azerbaijani officials accompanied on Tuesday, January 12, ICESCO’s delegation during the visit. Key Azerbaijani officials who joined the DG in the visit included the Minister of Culture, Mr. Anar Karimov; the Mayors of the two Districts; and the Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Morocco, Mr. Oktay Sudef Gurbanov. The list of participants also included the Secretary-General of the Azerbaijani National Commission for Education, Science, and Culture, Mr. Vasif Eyvazzade, and a host of officials from the Azerbaijani Ministry of Culture.

    The visit included field tours to several historic sites on the two districts, during which the ICESCO delegation took stock of the magnitude of damage that affected mosques, schools, centers, and cultural and archeological buildings. The visit also highlighted the dire need to reverse damage and safeguard the civilizational heritage.  

    Following the visit, the DG stated that ICESCO will work closely with Azerbaijan to restore and rebuild the sites, which are part of human heritage at large. He announced that the work is part of ICESCO’s new vision and strategy, which both accord great importance to safeguarding and inscribing heritage.

    Dr. AlMalik also commended the commitment of the Azerbaijani officials he met with, to rebuild, restore, and preserve the historic sites and cultural landmarks in the Nagorno-Karabakh Province, including churches given their significance in Azerbaijan’s memory and identity.

    ICESCO Takes Part in Conference to Examine Perspectives of Inter-state Relations in Sectarian Field

    The Islamic World Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) took part yesterday, in the conference on “The Sectarian World of Central Asia: Status, Risks and Methods of Resolution.” The Nursultan Nazarbayev Center for Development of Interfaith and Intercivilization Dialogue held the videoconference in Kazakhstan.
    Several religious leaders and representatives of international organizations attended the conference to discuss pertinent issues on the prospects of inter-state relations in the sectarian field.


    Ambassador Khalid Fathalrahman, Director of the Department of Dialogue and Cultural Diversity, and Dr. Sidra Tariq Jamil, communication expert at the same Department, represented ICESCO.
    Ambassador Fathalrahman stressed that the tolerance that prevails in the majority of countries in the region is the result of long years of cultural coexistence. These countries were part of the former Soviet Union, and are all characterized by similar limited levels of development, he explained. The Ambassador stated that the continuity of coexistence largely depends on governments’ adoption of policies that take into account the ethnic and religious and multicultural diversity of the region.


    During the conference, the Nursultan Nazarbayev Center for Development of Interfaith and Intercivilization Dialogue presented the various initiatives that Kazakhstan undertook to promote peace and harmony among societies and peoples of the world.

    ICESCO Launches Support Program for Museums Affected by COVID-19

    The Islamic World Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) launched its support program for 30 museums affected by the closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic to assist museums in the Islamic world.

    ICESCO published on its website a registration form for the administrations of the museums to fill-out and submit if they wish to be part of the program. Administrations must send the applications by post to the following address: Avenue des F.A.R., Hay Ryad, B.P. 2275, C.P. 10104, Rabat, Morocco, or by e-mail to the following two addresses: contact@icesco.org /culture@icesco.org. The applicants must send the files through the National Commissions of ICESCO Member States.

    Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, ICESCO Director-General (DG), announced that the Organization will allocate one million dollars to restore the collections of 30 museums in the Islamic world, which had been affected by the various crises. The announcement took place during the celebration of the Week of Museums (September 26 – October 2) and the Day of Heritage in Islamic World on September 25.

    The DG also called on countries, governmental institutions, and relevant parties to continue their role, during and after the COVID-19 crisis, in taking the necessary measures to reopen museum institutions and raise public awareness on the importance of museum conservation.

    ICESCO Launches Virtual Prize for Calligraphy, Patterns, and Miniatures

    The Islamic World Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) launched the “Virtual Prize for Calligraphy, Patterns and Miniatures” in celebration of the International Day of Islamic Art. Bahrain made the proposition and UNESCO adopted it at the 39th General Conference.  The Day is observed every 18th of November.

    The application is open to all calligraphers and visual artists to discover their talents in calligraphy and pattern design using virtual tools and techniques. The aim is to promote talents and creativity in the field and ensure the sustainability of the intangible cultural heritage that all ICESCO Member States share.

    The initiative is part of the “Distance Culture” Program of the “Global Humanitarian Coalition.” ICESCO launched during the lockdown period resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Participation is open to all artists from the Member States and all age groups. The text submitted as part of the Prize must include the first paragraph of the Charter of the Organization.

    Participation is open in the categories of calligraphy or miniatures or both, provided that the works be relevant to the topic of choice, and the work submitted consists of a high-resolution image. No special techniques, traditional or modern, are required in the making.

    Participants must email their works from November 23, 2020 to February 23,  2021 at the address: calligraphie@icesco.org. A jury will select the 12 candidates eligible to join ICESCO’s mobile international museum and exhibition. The 12 original works (not virtual copies) should be sent by post to the Organization’s mailing address. The jury will select the three winning works.

    The first winner will receive USD 5000, the second USD 3000, and the third USD 1500.

    The National Commissions and relevant parties in the Member States will announce the Prize in their respective countries. The participation form and guidelines are available on ICESCO’s website.

    ICESCO Joins Preparatory Meeting of World Arabic Language Day Celebration

    The Islamic World Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) took part in a videoconference with the Saudi Cultural Mission in Rabat and King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia, as part of the preparations for the celebration of the World Arabic Language Day 2020, under the theme “Arabic Language Academies: Necessity or Luxury?”

    The meeting brought together Dr. Majdi Haji Ibrahim, Head of ICESCO Center for Arabic Language for Non-Arabic Speakers; Dr. Youssef Ismaili, Expert at the Center; Dr. Yussra bint Hussain Al-Jazairi, the Saudi Cultural Attaché in Morocco; Mr. Abdulmun’im bin Nacer al-Tamimi, Cultural Supervisor at the Mission; Mr. Abdullah Azouz, Deputy Cultural Supervisor at the Mission; Dr. Abdurrahman al-Salami, Member of the Academic Council of King Abdulaziz University, Director of the Center of Research Excellence in Arabic Language; and Mr. Wael Ali, Director of Quranic Language Waqf Board.

    The participants explored the program of the celebration and the proposed formula of ICESCO International Conference, to be held as part of the celebration of the World Arabic Language Day 2020. The Saudi Cultural Mission in Rabat and King Abdulaziz University proposed to invite figures to speak at the conference and organize parallel activities.

    Africa an ICESCO Priority with Bright Future through Knowledge and its Peoples’ Efforts

    Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, Director-General (DG) of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), announced a new initiative to hold a high-level international conference on the future and strategic role of Africa in entrenching the values of peace and promoting the principles of civilizational dialogue.
    Dr. AlMalik also stated that ICESCO, through its new vision, aspires to become a reference for civilizational outreach and a hub of expertise leading the Member States towards a better future based on AI and advanced technologies.
    “Africa will remain ICESCO’s focus and a top priority,” Dr. AlMalik’s stressed during his address on “ICESCO Day for Africa.”

    The Organization held the event yesterday, at its headquarters in Rabat, under the theme “Perspectives and Potentials.” The celebration displayed several intellectual and artistic activities as well as workshops with the participation of specialists and guests.

    Dr. AlMalik explained that the celebration of “ICESCO Day for Africa” aims at achieving the noble objectives of ICESCO’s new vision, including the dissemination of knowledge, quality education, and peace culture. The goal is to ensure sustainable development to promote equal opportunities. The efforts are in line with the ambitious aspirations of the Agenda 2063 of the African Union. The celebration also demonstrates ICESCO’s attention to Africa as a strategic priority in its action plans, projects, programs, and activities.

    The DG highlighted the efforts of the Organization during the COVID-19 pandemic to support the African Member States. “ICESCO endeavored to meet African Member States’ needs through the implementation of programs and initiatives to support the sectors of education and health, and combat poverty, unemployment, and immigration challenges through the establishment of vocational training centers for the benefit of young people,” underscored Dr. AlMalik.

    The DG explained that ICESCO also supported women training programs in Africa to develop and manage small and revenue-generating businesses. The Organization established several Arabic language centers in Africa, a set of specialized academic chairs in the African continent, as well as the inscription of an important number of heritage sites on the Islamic World Heritage List of ICESCO.”

    Plenary sessions, Workshops and Art Exhibition in Observance of ICESCO Day for Africa, Scheduled for Monday

    The Islamic World Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) will celebrate on November 23, 2020, at its headquarters in Rabat, the “ICESCO Day for Africa”, under the theme: “Perspectives and Potentials.” The celebration is part of the considerable interest the Organization attaches to its African Member States and its sustained support for these countries in the fields of education, science, and culture.

    Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, ICESCO Director-General (DG), will give the opening ceremony address. Several sector directors will then speak as part of the event’s program. Activities also include workshops for a reflection and an exchange of experiences and knowledge on education for peace, solidarity, diversity and dialogue, social cohesion, and sustainable development in Africa, in addition to a training workshop on children, youth, and leadership.

    The program also includes a musical performance by the African band “The Messengers of Messages,” made up of members representing multiple African countries which released the song “The Call of Al-Hassan (Nidaa Al-Hassan),” in honor of His Majesty the late King Hassan II, may Allah rest his soul. The celebration will also hold an art exhibition on arts and diversity.

    The event will host the 15th African Prize. The “African Prize Foundation,” under the chairmanship of Mr. Nasrallah Belkhayat, will award the prize to both “The Messengers of Messages” and the BMCE Foundation.

    The celebration will kick off at 3:45 p.m. Rabat time.

    ICESCO Releases Winners’ List for its Creativity Awards

    The Islamic World Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) has the pleasure to announce the names of the winners of its creativity awards. The awards include the ICESCO Short Film Award, Short Stories Award, and Drawing and Music Award.

    The Organization launched the awards last April as part of its “Distance Culture,” a project of the “ICESCO Digital Home” initiative to promote artistic creativity and intellectual productivity among youth and students during the lockdown period. The Organization believed in the importance of supporting art and literature and identify new talents in the Islamic world, in cooperation with the Layan Cultural Foundation.

    The announcement of the awards’ winners comes as part of the celebration of the International Day of Islamic Art over the period from 18 through 25 November 2020. Six short films won the ICESCO Short Film Award as follows:

    First Prize: Rajaa Khaled Aïche, Palestine, for her film “My Friend”; and Mohammed Ehsani, Iran, for his film “The Sound of Wind.”

    Second Prize: Mohamed Afeeq, Sultanate of Brunei, for his film “Saya;” and Ben Gharnout Mustapha, Algeria, for his film “A New Life for the Fish.”

    Third Prize: Ali Fuad, Tanzania, for his film “Distancing;” and Ibrahim Riyad, Egypt, for his film “The Children of the Sea.”

    As for the Short Story Award, the winners are as follows:

    First Prize: Lina Fouz Boutounfit, Morocco.

    Second Prize: Hour bint Khaled Al Nabhanya, Oman.

    Third Prize: Hayfaa Saeed Al Mtairi, Saudi Arabia.

    ICESCO was keen on ensuring the participation of all age categories in the drawing contest. The winners are divided into two categories:

    The Music Award went to two participants from the Kingdom of Morocco:

    The participating works are characterized by the quality of the preparation, design and direction, and the great interest in educational content. The jury took into consideration the extraordinary conditions in which the works were produced and the unequal access to filming and direction equipment by students in poor and rich countries.

    Given the extraordinary current situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the impossibility to hold a face-to-face award ceremony, ICESCO will transfer the financial rewards to all winners.

    ICESCO Supports Morocco’s Action in Guerguerat

    The Islamic World Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), having followed the developments of the situation in the Moroccan-Mauritanian borders and having demonstrated an understanding of the situation in the area, lauds the move taken by the Moroccan authorities to establish security and facilitate communication in the region.
