Disseminating the values of moderation, dialogue and coexistence

Constructing peace and prosperity

To develop the cultural action for the benefit of Member States, ICESCO’s new vision hinges upon the regional and international cultural references, Member States’ commitments thereon, the resolutions and decisions of ICESCO’s General Conference and Executive Council, the Islamic Conference of Culture Ministers. It is also guided by the cultural action’s reference documents so far prepared by the Organization. The new vision adopts a comprehensive developmental approach that distances the cultural issues from the traditional approach which considers the cultural field as separate from the other sectors.
This approach rather tackles the local, regional and international issues influencing the cultural scene based on the Member States’ transformations with their ensuing interactions at the local, regional and international levels to stress the role of culture as one of the fundamental building blocks of sustainable comprehensive development. Besides, culture has new roles relevant to ensuring the cultural security, building knowledge society, promoting dialogue and cooperation with other cultures, countering extremist thought, hatred, violence and terrorism, innovating new models of cultural governance, adopting adequate cultural approaches to address the repercussions of the crises induced by migration and refugees outflows from the zones of conflict, war and poverty.

Capitals of Islamic Culture

The Third Islamic Conference of Culture Ministers (Doha, 29-31 December 2001) issued a resolution whereby it adopted the draft programme of the capitals of Islamic culture submitted by the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, and invited the OIC Member States to nominate cities of which ISESCO shall select – each year – three capitals of Islamic culture, representing the Arab, Asian and African regions. The said Conference also decided to proclaim Makkah Al-Mukarramah as the first city celebrated as capital of Islamic culture.
